The Beinneun Wind Farm contract that was agreed in October 2015 is the biggest contract signed by Senvion in the UK to date. Furthermore, the wind farm in the Scottish Highlands is also Blue Energy’s largest onshore project in the UK. Size quickly turned out to be a central issue. The small dimensions of the Kyle of Lochalsh port and the large proportions of the boats used made the transportation of the turbine parts highly challenging. Additionally, the conditions of the roads in the mountainous area demanded meticulous planning.
As the boat delivering the blades was the biggest to come into the port since the 1940s, the Senvion logistics team had special surveys carried out to confirm the vessel could berth. The public railway at the port was closed to allow the transportation trucks to leave the port and extensive road works were needed at the junction with public highways.
To fully optimize the 3.4M114 for the wind conditions on site, the tower foundations were set higher to provide extra height to the turbines. Beinneun wind farm is a perfect example of Senvion’s collaborative approach that helps master logistically complex projects. It also demonstrates how Senvion successfully adjusts its product offerings to the specifi cs of local markets.
